Trans-active (2001) was a major transition project jointly delivered by researchers at the University of East London Department of Innovation Studies and Mencap. The project was funded through the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and had two main aims; To develop technologies that enable people with severe learning disabilities to participate more fully in the learning process using IT, by facilitating the production, storage and dissemination of electronic information about themselves; To establish the information and support materials and network through development of an online community base.
The project launched in January 2001 as a pilot. Young people with a learning disability aged between 13 and 19 teamed up with peers without learning disabilities from local mainstream schools. An interactive website and practical resource pack were created to enable young people with mild or severe and complex learning disabilities to plan their own futures through the development of a multimedia passport.
